Geneva Cole is an assistant professor in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona. Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher in race and ethnic politics in the Department of Government at William and Mary. She received her PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 2023. Geneva's research interests broadly include public opinion, political behavior, and the role of political and social identities in shaping support for racial equality. Her research has been published in Social Science Quarterly, the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties, and featured in the Washington Post, MinnPost, and the UCL Centre for US Politics Working Paper Series in American Politics.

Dr. Trese (Theresa) Ricke-Kiely has research and practice interests in nonprofit leadership and management, nonprofit mergers, and mindfulness. Her teaching focus includes leadership, nonprofit management, and public organizational theory and behavior. She has published articles in various journals, including the International Journal of Public Leadership, Research in Ethical Issues in Organizations, The International Journal of Servant-Leadership, International Leadership Journal, and the Journal of Nonprofit Leadership and Education. She is the inaugural book review editor for the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership and is a peer reviewer for various nonprofit and leadership journals. She is co-editor for a special issue in the Journal of Ideology focused on nonprofit leadership and management approaches. She is also a leadership coach and nonprofit consultant specializing in executive, board, and mindful leadership. She published "The Path to Mindful Leadership: Practices for Nonprofit Success" by Kendall Hunt in the summer of 2024 and is starting her second book, aimed at emerging nonprofit leaders. Before joining SGPP, she held administrative and teaching positions at the University of St Thomas, The University of Notre Dame, and the University of South Carolina. Dr. Ricke-Kiely has an EdD in organizational leadership from the University of Sarasota, an MPA from Marist College, and a BA from SUNY New Paltz.

Cameron Mailhot is an Assistant Professor in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona. Broadly, his research lies at the intersection of international organizations, international security, peace and conflict processes, democratization, and statebuilding. More specifically, his research examines the short- and long-term role that the international community plays in countries' political (post-conflict and post-authoritarian) transitions, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe. Recent work of his examines the determinants of social and political trust in these contexts. His research has been published in the American Journal of Political Science, International Studies Quarterly, and Small Wars & Insurgencies. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2023.

Originally from Northern Minnesota, Cameron enjoys spending his time outside hiking and skiing. As a FGLI student, he is always glad to speak with other FGLI students about his or their experiences in higher education and academia, more broadly.

Tessa Provins is an Assistant Professor in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Merced in 2016 and 2018, respectively, and a B.A. in Economics from Stanford University in 2013.

Dr. Provins's research primarily focuses on two areas: American legislative institutions and Indigenous institutions and policy. In her work on American institutions, she examines how the design of legislative bodies impacts outcomes for groups divided by race, gender, and party affiliation. Her research on Indigenous institutions explores the structure of Native American tribal governments and their effects on intra-tribal, inter-tribal, and government relationships, as well as policy outcomes. While she has several ongoing projects that include tribal case studies, including work on her own tribe, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, most of Dr. Provin's Indigenous politics research takes a pan-tribal approach. Dr. Provin’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Politics, Journal of Public Policy, Political Research Quarterly, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Public Choice, and Social Science Quarterly.

Her teaching interests include American politics, race politics, gender politics, and quantitative methods.

Gemma Smith holds a joint appointment as Assistant Research Professor at the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy and Assistant Professor in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona.

Gemma is an interdisciplinary scholar at the intersection of environmental policy, governance, and justice, and water resources engineering. She graduated from Stanford University with a PhD in Environment and Resources and a Minor in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2023.

Her current research focuses on the governance of international freshwater resources. She works to improve the management of transboundary water quality and climate change adaptation through better understanding of governance processes and outcomes in North American borderlands. Her methods draw on social, political, economic and environmental qualitative and quantitative data with the goal of making more robust causal connections between institutional design, policy decisions, and environmental outcomes. Her research has been published in Policy Studies Journal, Environmental Science & Policy, and International Journal of the Commons, among others.

Prior to her PhD, Gemma completed her Master’s in International Policy (Environment and Energy specialization) at Stanford University and a Graduate Diploma in Political Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She previously worked in international investment management in Europe and Asia, having completed her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Spanish at the University of Exeter, UK, in 2013.

Michael L. Burgoyne is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and joins the School of Government and Public Policy. He deployed twice to Iraq in command and staff positions and served as the defense attaché in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was a counterinsurgency trainer at the National Training Center and co-authored The Defense of Jisr al-Doreaa, a tactical primer on counterinsurgency. He served in various policy and security cooperation positions in the Americas, including assignments as the Army attaché in Mexico, Andean Ridge desk officer at U.S. Army South, senior defense official in Guatemala, and policy analyst at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Burgoyne holds an M.A. in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College and an M.A. in security studies from Georgetown University. His research and writing focus on security in the Western Hemisphere, insurgency, transnational organized crime, alliances, and defense policy. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in war studies at King’s College London.

Spencer Lindsay is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the School of Government and Public Policy. His teaching research interests include racial politics, American democracy, public law and political behavior. Spencer earned his Bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin-- Madison. While in attendance, he worked both on political campaigns and in the Wisconsin State Legislature. Shortly after graduating, Spencer attended California State University-- Long Beach, earning a Master’s degree in Political Science. Spencer graduated from CSULB with the highest honor a graduate student can receive from the university. Shortly after finishing his Master’s he taught briefly at Golden West College. He then went on to earn a PhD at the University of Notre Dame. His current research focuses on racial attitudes and democratic values.

Samantha Simon is an Assistant Professor in the School of Government and Public Policy and the School of Sociology. Using ethnographic and qualitative methods, her research focuses on violence, gender, race, and organizational inequality. Her upcoming book – titled Before the Badge: How Academy Training Shapes Police Violence – is based on one year of ethnographic field work at four police training academies. In her book, she examines how the hiring and training at police academies emphasizes the use of violence, focusing on the ways that gender and race inform these processes.

Simon's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Russell Sage Foundation, and the American Association for University Women, among others. Her work has been published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals, including in Social Problems, Law & Society Review, Qualitative Sociology, and Gender, Work & Organization. She has a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Lori Poloni-Staudinger currently serves as Dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) at the University of Arizona. She also has a faculty appointment as professor in the School of Government and Public Policy. Previously, she was Interim Dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, associate dean for research, personnel, and graduate programs and chair of the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Northern Arizona University. Poloni-Staudinger has actively promoted student success, faculty governance, community engagement, international education, and diversity in the academy.

The author of five books and over thirty articles, chapters and reports, Poloni-Staudinger’s research and publications focus mainly on social movements and extra institutional political participation in Europe and the United States. Over time, her work has moved from focusing on environmental movements to a focus on women’s movements. Her recent work examines questions around women and political violence as well as women and politics more generally. Her expertise has led to publications in the Washington Post and other popular media outlets.

Poloni-Staudinger has worked to increase citizen participation in politics, facilitating dozens of community forums throughout the state of Arizona. Her civic engagement work led to the development of Arizona Deliberates, a cooperative, grant-funded project between Maricopa Community College District, NAU, and nonprofits. She has also served as the Women’s Caucus president for the Midwest Political Science Association.

Poloni-Staudinger has been a Distinguished Fulbright Fellow at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, Austria, a Kettering Foundation Fellow, and a consultant for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. She attended Harvard’s Management Development Program, which provided training and insight into higher education leadership and operations.

Poloni-Staudinger received her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology with a minor in French from Colorado State University. She also received an MA in political science with a concentration in environmental politics from Colorado State. Her Ph.D. was earned at Indiana University in political science and her dissertation focused on environmental non-governmental organizations in Europe.

Dr. Charlotte Hu is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the School of Government and Public Policy. Her research interests include courts and sentencing, cybercrime, and white collar crime. She teaches courses in Criminal Justice Administration, Cyber Crime, Surveillance and Privacy. She completed her PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University.
